FirstLight Offers Five Tips to Talk About Money  
     FirstLight Federal Credit Union is launching a new bilingual, economic show to help West Texas and Las Cruces residents with their financial wellness. The show is called Get Lit with FirstLight and originally launched as a podcast earlier this year and now evolved into a full blown 30-minute video show that premiered, Friday, August 19, 2022, at 1:00 PM. 

This first show features guests Aliana Apodaca, a motivational speaker and leadership coach and Maria De Jesus Ortiz, who provides financial literacy presentations throughout the community. Together with hosts Sidney Alvarez and Paulette Murguia, the panel ask, “Are you financially compatible with the one you love?”  

  Through the discussion, the group provides five signs that show if you and your significant other will be able to merge your financial lives successfully:

1. Talking About Money Without Arguing  
  A recent financial survey found 30% of people find it difficult to talk about money with their partner. Our panel encourages partners to have an open dialogue about money — working together to support financial goals.

2. Lying About Purchases and/or Their Costs
Be open with your partner to elevate greater financial trust.

3. Trust In Your Partner’s Spending Habits
 If you trust your partner will spend responsibly, you are assured fewer arguments. Evaluate a potential partner’s money habits by comparing them to your own.

4. Difference In Credit Scores
Two people with similar credit scores tend to have parallel financial behaviors. But what if you do not? The panel discusses programs to repair or build credit.

5. Similar Spending Priorities
Do you have similar spending priorities (retirement, savings)? When you are a couple, your spending will affect your partner—even if you keep separate accounts—because you will need money to accomplish joint financial goals.
